When the humidity inside drops, the skin begins to lose moisture which causes you to feel the dryness and itching.  For maintaining a healthy skin, one must alter their daily skin regimen to address the humidity change.

Below are 10 tips provided by Dr. Mary McKenzie, a dermatologist from Canada to prevent and relieve healthy skin:

1.  Soak your skin with moisturizers

Using a non-irritating, hypoallergenic moisturizer, can make a significant difference in your skin. this treatment works differently than mainstream moisturizers. Not only does it reduce water loss, it helps build the skin, as well as calm the burning and itching sensation.

2. Avoid Superhot Showers and Baths

Taking a hot bath may feel great on those cold days, but the intense heat of the shower or bath actually breaks down the lipid barriers in the skin, which can lead to moisture loss.

3. Avoid using heavily fragranced soaps

It’s best to use fragrance-free, non detergent, neutral-pH products to cleanse your skin.

4. Hook up the Humidifier

Help restore moisture indoors by placing a humidifier in your home to prevent your skin from drying out

5. Wear skin-loving fabrics

Natural fibers, such as cotton and silk feel wonderful and allow your skin to breathe.

6. Avoid fragranced detergents and fabric softeners

Use fragrance-free detergents that won’t irritate your skin and try skipping frabic softeners. 

7. Hydrate your Skin

Drinking water helps your skin stay young looking and is good for your overall health.

8.  Keep wrapped up

Try to limit your skin’s exposure to harsh temperatures and damaging winds, which are the main culprit to dry skin problems.

9. Protect your hands

Chapped and irritated dry skin on the hands is common for many with dry skin. Try rubber gloves to protect them from hot water and harsh detergents. Wearing cotton gloves underneath may also be a good idea, especially if you are latex allergy-prone.

10. Seek Medical Treatment

If your skin condition does not improve, or if it worsens, it is important to see your physician for an appropriate course of treatment.

Lifestyle also means rewarding excellence wherever you find it by not taking the small things of life for granted. With Valentine’s Day approaching I wanted to illustrate this with a personal anecdote:

Many years ago my lady friend and I were on a trip to Carmel, California, for some shopping and exploring. On the way we stopped at a service station. As soon as we parked our car in front of the pumps, a young man, about eighteen or nineteen, came bouncing out to the car and with a big smile said, “Can I help you?”

“Yes,” I answered. “A full tank of gas, please.” I wasn’t prepared for what followed. In this day and age of self-service and deteriorating customer treatment, this young man checked every tire, washed every window - even the sunroof - singing and whistling the whole time. We couldn’t believe both the quality of service and his upbeat attitude about his work.

When he brought the bill, I said to the young man, “Hey, you really have taken good care of us. I appreciate it.”

He replied, “I really enjoy working. It’s fun for me and I get to meet nice people like you.”

This kid was really something!

I said, “We’re on our way to Carmeland we want to get some milkshakes. Can you tell us where we can find the nearest Baskin-Robbins?”

“Baskin-Robbins is just a few blocks away,” he said as he gave us exact directions. Then he added, “Don’t park out front - park around to the side so your car won’t get sideswiped.”

What a kid!

As we got to the ice cream store we ordered milkshakes, except that instead of two, we ordered three. Then we drove back to the station. Our young friend dashed out to greet us. “Hey, I see you got your milkshakes.”

“Yes, and this one is for you!”

His mouth fell open. “For me?”

“Sure. With all the fantastic service you gave us, I couldn’t leave you out of the milkshake deal.”

“Wow!” was his astonished reply.

As we drove off I could see him in my rear-view mirror just standing there, grinning from ear to ear.

Now, what did this little act of generosity cost me? Only about two dollars - you see, it’s not the money, it’s the style.

Well, I must have been feeling especially creative that day, so upon our arrival in Carmel I drove directly to a flower shop. As we walked inside I said to the florist, “I need a long-stemmed rose for my lady to carry while we go shopping in Carmel.”

The florist, a rather unromantic type, replied, “We sell them by the dozen.”

“I don’t need a dozen,” I said, “just one.”

“Well,” he replied haughtily, “it will cost you two dollars.”

“Wonderful,” I exclaimed. “There’s nothing worse than a cheap rose.”

Selecting the rose with some deliberation, I handed it to my friend. She was so impressed! And the cost? Two dollars. Just two dollars. A bit later she looked up and said, “Jim, I must be the only woman in Carmel today carrying a rose.” And I believe she probably was.

Can you imagine the opportunity to create magic with those around you, and all for the cost of a few dollars, some imagination and care. Remember, it is not the amount that matters but the thought and care that often has the greatest impact upon those you love.

1.  Buy yourself a big heart shaped box of chocolates then take a bite out of each one, throwing back any fruit flavored nougat ones that you do not like

2.  Create yourself a Valentine’s Day playlist of all your favorite that no one else likes. Play your new playlist at maximum volume, while singing and dancing along

3.  Call a friend or family that you have not talked to in a while who is also alone on Valentine’s Day

4.  Clean out your closet, making a big pile of clothes that do not fit or are no longer your style and bring them to your local Salvation Army

I wish that English had different words for love. It does seem strange that we say “I love chocolate or ice cream,” and “I love my husband,” but they really are not the same thing.  Something to think about……

Another popular legend states that another man by the name of Valentine was imprisoned and fell in love with the jailer’s daughter. When he was about to be put to death, he sent his love a note signed “Your Valentine”, which prompted the use of these words on the cards we send today. Whether or not these legends are true, the fact remains that the Valentine’s History has been long standing, and will continue to be celebrated through the giving of cards, gifts and flowers for many years to come.
